Family Learning Series

Please join the Office of Family Engagement for two learning series this week.

On Tuesday, March 12, 2019 from 6:00 – 7:30 p.m. at the New Bridge Learning Center, there will be a session entitled Human Trafficking – Is It in My Community?
Join Safe Harbor for a workshop on understanding the issue of human trafficking in our community. We will explore tactics of abuse, the scope of the problem in the United States and locally, how it differs from other forms of abuse, and the difference between sex trafficking and prostitution. We will also discuss how to recognize red flags in your community and how to help if you suspect someone is a victim. Participants will leave with a better understanding of human trafficking and how to get help in the Richmond community.

On Wednesday, March 13, 2019 from 12:00 – 1:30 p.m. at Glen Allen Public Library, there will be a session entitled Raising a Confident Child- What’s Your Parenting Style. Confidence is one of the greatest gifts a parent can instill in their child. A kid who lacks confidence will be reluctant to try new or challenging things because they’re afraid of failing or disappointing others. This can end up holding them back …so parents must encourage and support children as they attempt to tackle difficult tasks. Your parenting style can affect everything from how much your child weighs to how he/she feels about himself/herself. Do you believe in lots of discipline or are you more permissive? Find out about the different types of parenting and learn about which will works best for you.

Tdap Information

Information for the Tdap immunization clinic was sent home with your fifth grade student last week. Current state law requires every child to submit proof of the Tdap vaccine before the first day of 6th grade. Although the Code of Virginia may change this year to require Tdap for entry into 7th grade rather than 6th grade, your child may receive the Tdap now if he/she will be at least 11 years old by the date of the clinic. HCPS is holding a one-time school based clinic at Ward for your convenience. Please review the information, complete the consent form, and return it to your child’s teacher before March 4, 2019. Your child’s insurance information must be attached. Due to new regulations, consent forms that are incomplete or not turned in by March 4, 2019 will not be accepted.

This session will focus on at-home strategies and tools to support academic achievement.
