Principal’s Message

Dear Ward Parents and Guardians,

We hope that you and your child had an enjoyable summer and are ready for a wonderful new school year at Henry D. Ward

Elementary School! Our theme this year is “Together, Everyone Achieves MORE”! Now, more than ever, our teachers, staff,

parents, students, and members of our community must come together to support our students and our families. The Ward team

wants you to know that we are 100% committed to helping our students and families navigate the virtual school experience.

To that end, we want to start offering our support to help make your transition to virtual learning a success. During our Virtual

Open House, you will learn more about what to expect in terms of communication to keep you informed. Teachers and staff will

work with families to help every student and parent understand the platforms that we will be using to support learning at home.

We will be providing students with learning support bags that will include some materials that we believe our students will need

to complete their work virtually. We are working with community partners to assist families that need assistance securing

supplies for school as well. We fully recognize that our students and families will need ongoing support and we want to assure

you that we will be there to fulfill that role.

Along with the change in the learning setting, the length of our school day has been adapted to fit a virtual format and the school

day for our students is 8:00a.m.-12:35p.m. (for PK-2 students) and 8:00-1:05 (for 3-5 students). I encourage our students to

log-on beginning at 7:50 a.m. to hear our morning announcements and so that they are ready to begin the day at 8:00 a.m. We

recognize that 4 or more hours in front of a device is extensive, so the day also includes a 30-minute resource block (P.E., Art,

Music, Library, Social Emotional lessons, and STEAM integration); a 30-minute virtual recess; a 45-minute lunch break; and

breaks for movement.

Our virtual instruction will continue to include reading instruction that will take place in a whole group setting where phonics,

vocabulary, and reading strategies will be taught, along with small group instruction that will continue to be differentiated based

on student reading levels. Math instruction will also include whole group and small group components to teach grade level skills

and small groups to differentiate student learning based on need. Science, history, and writing instruction will also take place

during the day. Despite the shortened school day, our students will continue to receive quality instruction in all academic areas.

Additionally, Ward will continue to offer family events to engage our community, though the format may look differently than in

years past. One of our main priorities will continue to be connecting with our families in meaningful ways and developing strong

partnerships with our parents.

I am very excited about this year and the ways that we will continue to connect with our students and families despite beginning

the year virtually. I am looking forward to working with our wonderful students, parents, community members, and our talented

faculty this school year. Together, we will achieve MORE.
